
Below is the criteria to receive an invitation to become a candidate for membership in the Helen M. Torrance Chapter of the National Honor Society of Edgewater High School (NHS). This esteemed organization recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.
Membership Eligibility: Students will be tapped to apply to the Society based on the following criteria:
- Candidates must at least be a junior to be considered eligible for membership unless already in NHS at another school.
- Juniors and seniors are both eligible to be a member of the Helen M. Torrance Chapter.
Scholarship:
- Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 weighted and 3.0 unweighted.
- Demonstrate academic achievement and commitment to academic excellence.
Leadership:
- Demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and a willingness to take on challenges.
Character:
- Demonstrate integrity, honesty, and a strong moral compass.
- Show respect for yourself, others, including peers, teachers, and the community.
- Cannot have any disciplinary infraction including but not limited to level 2 or higher.
Service:
- Have on file through the Guidance Department a minimum of 50 hours (seniors) or 35 hours (juniors) of community service (voluntary hours only). Community service hours MUST be submitted on a monthly basis to the Guidance Department. All members need to complete a total of 100 hours before graduation.
- Demonstrate a commitment to volunteering and giving back to the community
Tapping/application - September
Eligible students will be tapped and received application packets from the NHS Adviser. Your application MUST be fully completed, meeting ALL the requirements and deadline to be considered for membership. Applicants become ineligible if they missed the due dates or their application packet is incomplete.
Candidates selected for induction will be notified, followed by a mandatory information meeting regarding the induction ceremony and NHS in general.
Induction Ceremony
The candle light induction ceremony will be held during the evening. All current members, officially tapped candidates for induction, family members, friends and community members will be invited. Candidates will become fully inducted Chapter members and will receive a membership pin and certificate as well as all the honors, privileges and responsibilities of being an NHS member.
Please note that membership in the NHS is a privilege and comes with responsibilities. As a member, you will be expected to maintain the highest standards of scholarship, leadership, character, and service to remain a member.
