In the early 1950's, the school board divided the Orlando High School into two schools. North High School and South High School. On the very last day of teacher post-planning of the old Orlando High School, the OHS faculty gave the principal a new suit as a gift. He became ill at school and died that day. His name was William R. Boone, and one of the people who rushed him to the hospital was Orville R. Davis, Edgewater High's first principal. The School Board renamed the South High School after Principal Boone. Not to upset the old Orlando High School alumni they named Edgewater after the street it was on. Edgewater High opened for the 1952-1953 school year. The football rivalry between Edgewater and Boone is one of the longest rivalries in the state of Florida. The winner of the football game takes home the Barrel and holds it until next year's game. Edgewater holds the record with the most wins. The football stadium, the Frank Lough Field is named after one of the first football coaches. Edgewater’s campus was renovated and rebuilt during the 2010-2011 school year.
